EQUIGEA_PSERC ICSI Photo Peterson and Smith Equine Reproduction Center, a SBS Affiliate Laboratory in Ocala, FL, has launched EQUIGEA, a company founded by three prominent individuals in the field of assisted equine reproduction. Dr. Phil Matthews, Dr. Cesare Galli and Dr. Ed Squires each have over 30 years of experience in not only developing techniques in the reproductive industry but also making them applicable within a commercial setting. EQUIGEA offers a complete and all-inclusive Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) program consisting of aspirations, maturation, sperm injections, embryo development and transfers. All of these services are provided “in-house” at Peterson and Smith Equine Reproduction Center to ensure the highest probability of success.

Patrick Rollins_Family CroppedPatrick Rollins has been a part of Select Breeders Southwest (SBSW) since January 2010 after receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree from Texas Tech University.  As Senior Freeze Technician, he is responsible for many aspects of the operations at SBSW. They include processing frozen semen in both the main lab and the mobile lab and overseeing the collection and processing of cooled semen as well as the processing of semen using EquiPure. During the breeding season, he enjoys spending time with the horses while overseeing the mare management services provided by SBSW. The storage and distribution of the frozen semen at SBSW is also under his watchful care.

Analysis of Frozen Thawed Semen_Cutting Straws 1 One concern some mare owners and veterinarians have with using equine frozen semen is the MYTH that it is difficult to thaw and breed a mare with it...this is not true. The process of thawing frozen semen is fairly simple if you have the right tools. Also, inseminating a mare with frozen semen isn’t any different than inseminating her with cooled or fresh semen, unless you are using a deep horn insemination technique. The only concern is that one must follow the specific thawing instructions precisely in order to obtain maximum post-thaw survival. This requires careful attention to detail and a temperature controlled water bath.

Cabin White Farm

Steve Joyce_Cabin Master and Bobby Meyerhoff Steve Joyce’s farm, Cabin White Farm, in Guilford County North Carolina gets its name from a poem written about the rich history of the revolutionary war in that area. Steve’s love of horses began as a teenager when he would muck stalls at a local stable after school that hosted hunter shows, horse trials and local hunt club events. He fell in love with the sport horse and began to take an interest in foxhunting. He said, “I love many things about the sport including a handsome field hunter. I took a particular interest in the cross-bred hunter, the crossing of thoroughbred and draught horses, to produce a horse with plenty of blood and constitution.” This love is evident in the athletic offspring produced as a result of the breeding program at Cabin White Farm.
