The Basics of the QC Program
SBS believes that any semen frozen within the affiliate network, when subjected to an independent analysis, should accurately represent the quoted sperm concentration and post-thaw motility and be found to be free of bacterial mare pathogens. Therefore the basis of the SBS QC program is to culture and test the motility and concentration of the semen frozen by affiliate labs to ensure alignment on post-thaw analysis.
QC straws, collection data sheets and freeze records are submitted to the SBS regional headquarters on a quarterly basis and each affiliate lab receives a report back including an overall percentage score. The report is divided into two sections; fifty percent of the report is dependent upon agreement on the post-thaw quality and the remaining fifty percent of the report is based on the evaluation of stallion management and implementation of SBS Standard Operating Procedures.
