Expansion Increases Efficiency of SBS's Storage
& Distribution Program

Now in the 13th year at our Maryland location, SBS continues to experience steady growth thanks to the consistent value, quality and service provided to our customers.  We are very grateful for the ongoing solid relationship with Hilltop Farm and would like to thank Mrs. Jane MacElree, Scott and Susanne Hassler and the Hilltop staff for providing a wonderful location for our home operations.

We continue to be encouraged by the increase in demand for frozen semen by mare owners and veterinarians in North America, reflected by the growth in the numbers of shipments distributed from our facilities. During the 2004 breeding season alone, SBS in Maryland and SBSW in Texas combined to ship out 823 individual shipments containing over 4700 doses to breeders in the US and Canada.  This increased use of frozen semen is a reflection of the confidence that breeders have gained in the results of frozen semen as well as the ease of management for mares bred with frozen semen using the timed insemination protocol SBS has championed over the past several years.  In an effort to accommodate our growing sperm bank and better service our clients, we recently completed an addition to our facility devoted exclusively to frozen semen storage and distribution.

A custom semen inventory database program, Prism, designed in cooperation with Minitube of America, is helping make distribution even more efficient as well as providing up to the minute inventory reports for our customers. Computers in the lab and offices link to a workstation in the warehouse so that authorizations and requests are immediately available to the technicians in the shipping department for processing and packing.  Many thanks to the entire SBS staff and especially to Emily Kirk and Becky Gallant for their work during development of the custom software and completing the daunting task of updating the database with thousands of records compiled over nearly 20 years of semen freezing.
