News From Select Breeders Southwest

SBSW CrewAubrey is described on billboards and in travel guides as “Horse Country, USA”, a perfect location for Select Breeders SW. In fact, based on the work being done at SBSW, that slogan could more accurately read “Horse Country, Global”. Year after year, SBSW has been shipping frozen semen from multiple breeds and disciplines worldwide; our 2013 roster for collection included the biggest stallion names in QH racing shipped to South America, champion cutting horse semen to Australia, New Zealand, South America and the European Union, and semen from prize winning Arabian show horses shipped to Qatar, Israel, the EU and Australia. Some of these champions stand at Select Breeders SW Stallion Center; others are collected from our Mobile Labs, but all of this globally bound semen is stored and then distributed from our state of the art facility in Aubrey, Texas.

Spring 2013 was a busy time in the broodmare barn. Although Quarter Horse is King here in Texas, breeding manager, Zach Kahn, assisted many beautiful babies into the world, and they were not all Quarter Horses. Zach reports that he foaled out several Arabians, Warmbloods and Paint horses this year as well. The entire SBSW staff is thrilled with each new arrival; nothing is more exciting than being involved in the life of a new colt or filly. Zach and his crew watch over the foals day in and day out, to make sure they are healthy and developing properly, and we’re all a little sad when the day comes for them to leave. In addition to the full schedule handling stallions and mares that keeps everyone on the ranch busy, the Mobile Lab technicians are kept on the go too. Patrick Rollins heads up our team of road warriors and he estimates that SBSW MLs have logged over 12,000 miles so far this year! That mileage number for 2013 will rise still more with several late summer and fall trips on the schedule that include: Houston- August 19-30, and September 9-20, and Wisconsin October 21–November 1, 2013, as well as numerous day trips planned for ranches in the North Texas area. Select Breeders SW is also excited to announce the arrival of new staff this year. We welcomed to our team:

Caitlin Noble, Export Coordinator. Caitlin is a recent graduate of Texas A & M, with a BS in Animal Science. Caitlin owns a Quarter Horse mare and in her leisure time she enjoys trail riding.

Sharon Miggans is our new Lab Manager. Sharon is a graduate of University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Wilmington, NC. Sharon brings a wealth of lab experience to her position; her impressive resume includes several years at Duke University Medical Center, Durham NC, as a Laboratory Research Analyst. Sharon is the proud owner of a handsome Warmblood gelding that her daughter has in dressage training.

Debbie McPherson is our new General Manager. Debbie brings to the job twenty years of business experience, including work as the Managing-Comptroller for Pegasus Air Transport, a company that specialized in moving racehorses and Olympic horses around the world. Always a horse lover, Debbie came up through the ranks of the US Pony Club and studied as a working student under Hungarian Olympic Rider, Major Charles T. Valko. Today, on her small ranch in Aubrey, she rehabilitates ex thoroughbred racehorses for new careers.
