SBS-MD2012 marks the 25th anniversary of the formal incorporation of Select Breeders Service and we continue to expand and grow in our effort to be a leader in equine reproduction services and technology. This year we are very excited to share with you some big news! Select Breeders Service is pleased to announce a partnership with David Scofield, DVM, Board Certified in Equine Reproduction, to expand our veterinary care and mare management services in Chesapeake City, Maryland. Through a newly formed division of SBS, operating under the name SBS-Veterinary Services (SBS-VS), Dr. Scofield and the SBS team will offer services including management of breeding and foaling mares, advanced diagnostic techniques and therapies, embryo transfer, and routine veterinary care from a newly renovated facility. Dr. Scofield brings to SBS-VS a strong background in general equine practice, embryo transfer, mare management, foaling services, and infertility of the mare and stallion. Coupled with SBS’s proven commitment to stallion reproduction and quality service, SBS-VS is excited to offer expanded mare management and veterinary services in Chesapeake City.

Dave Dr. Scofield grew up in Delaware and on the eastern shore of Maryland. After college in North Carolina, he received his DVM from Oklahoma State University in 2009. Following graduation, Dr. Scofield completed an internship at Weatherford Equine Medical Center in Weatherford, Texas and later joined Colorado State University’s Equine Reproduction Laboratory for a residency in Equine Reproduction. His research focused on anti-microbial agents for bacterial and fungal infections in mares. His day-to-day activities included managing reproductively challenged mares and stallions, embryo transfer, foaling mares, high-risk pregnancies, and neonatal foals. He has presented at both the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) and the American College of Theriogenologists (ACT) annual conferences and published multiple peer-reviewed papers. He passed the certifying exam for Diplomate status in the American College of Theriogenologists (Board Certification in Reproduction) in 2012.

Rosella and Niall Breeding season has come to a close and the emphasis has now switched to freezing semen. Jonathan is out and about on the mobile lab and you can view our mobile lab schedule here.

We have a talented team here at SBS-Maryland, and not just in the professional sense. Our staff members are accomplishing big things in their personal lives as well. Jonathan is an active runner and he completed his 4th marathon October 13th in Baltimore, MD. He improved his time for a personal best, coming in at 4hrs 16min. After a long day driving the mobile lab around NY and NJ, he still found time to run 10 miles!

Rosella and her husband Niall Saville (photo left) operate a Thoroughbred training business at Fair Hill. They were recently featured in the Breeders Cup issue of the California Thoroughbred magazine, click here to read the full story (page 39/68). Before coming in to work at SBS, Rosella is up bright and early galloping a couple of horses on the training track.

Sassy Julie (photo right) competes in eventing and finished her season on a high with a win at the Maryland Horse Trails October 13th and a 5th place finish at the WaredacaTraining Level 3 Day October 23-27th. To condition for the long format 3 day event Julie was riding 1.5-2hrs six days a week, often doing trot sets in the dark with a miners lamp on her helmet. They bring this dedication and commitment to work as well. Go team SBS!

If you are interested in our new mare management and veterinary services program or bringing in your stallion for semen collection, evaluation or freezing, please feel free to give us a call (410) 885-3202 or email for more info. We look forward to working with you!
