Sail_Win_Tattoo Francesca Fasani and her daughter, Sara D’Imperio, run a small Quarter Horse farm. It is located in Angera, Northern Italy on the shores of Lake Maggiore and not far away from the Swiss border. Francesca started breeding horses almost 40 years ago when she and a friend bought a Trotter broodmare. Proper Protocol for Receiving a Shipment of Equine Frozen Semen

Tank_Red_Seal You have made the decision to breed your mare using frozen semen, now what? The choice of breeding your mare with frozen semen over cooled or fresh semen has a few notable benefits. Aside from the expanded availability of stallions available to you with frozen semen, e.g. those that are located in another country, are limited by their competition schedule or are deceased, another big advantage of frozen semen is that the shipment can be sent out ahead of time so it is ready and waiting on your mare to ovulate; as opposed to your mare waiting on the semen to be collected from the stallion, processed and cooled, and finally shipped out to you. Nonetheless, despite this added convenience, it is important to be prepared and plan ahead for your frozen semen shipment.  That way you are fully prepared when the time comes to request and receive your shipment in order to optimize your chance of a successful breeding.

Emery_Red_JumperSince the age of 5, Marie Emrey has owned, worked and shown horses or ponies. Her original dream was to become a veterinarian but she ended up a biologist doing research. Though her areas of interest were equine lameness/ biomechanics and genetics she wasn’t working in either of these fields and therefore opted to become a certified farrier. She was mainly doing corrective shoeing on weekends and evenings. As a result of these efforts she was able to retire early from her research position to focus on what she loved most…breeding horses. In 2001, Marie and her husband, Jay, purchased undeveloped land in Cecil County Maryland and subsequently began building Lazy J Sporthorses and Ponies from the ground up.

PSER Stallion barn Peterson & Smith Equine Reproduction Center (PSERC) had another successful year in 2013. Our embryo transfer program enjoyed the high standard of success we have been able to maintain for almost 15 years. We continued to share in our client’s success through our mare and stallion management services. The promising Arabian stallion, Trussardi, was added to our resident stallion roster and had a very successful cooled semen campaign. We were also able to freeze and export Trussardi’s semen to Australia and are anticipating the arrival of his first foals “downunder” later in 2014. We thank Tamworth Veterinary Center for their assistance in opening this new market for Trussardi, as well as their continued support in the management of the Australian distribution program for Smart Sugar Badger, another resident stallion.
