For the past several years, Select Breeders Services has had the honor of assisting the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) in the fulfillment of grants they have been awarded through a USDA supported program called the Quality Samples Program (QSP). This program assists in providing monetary support for the export of livestock genetics from the United States to international markets. Rather than exporting live animals, the export of frozen semen allows for a much larger impact in the genetic pool of foreign countries. Most recently, the destination was the Czech Republic in Eastern Europe. Frozen semen from several stallions was processed at the 6666 Ranch, an SBS Affiliate Laboratory, then exported by Select Breeders Southwest (SBSW) in Aubrey, TX to the Czech Republic. Though there have been many frozen semen shipments of American Quarter Horse stallions to Western Europe, this was the first request from the 6666 Ranch for an Eastern European country and the first shipment SBSW has facilitated to the Czech Republic.

Marta Agrò (photo left) works alongside Dr. Sandro Barbacini at Studio Veterinario Associato Luretta, an SBS Affiliate Laboratory located in Piacenza, Italy. She has always had a passion for horses and was thrilled when one of the founders of the Luretta veterinary clinic asked her to join his team which she has now been a part of for several years. She grew up in Italy with her parents and two older sisters. After graduating high school she studied at the University of Parma where she completed courses to become an equine breeding technician. She also began working for a well-known fast food restaurant at this time. She began to save the money she earned to achieve her long time dream of owning a horse. In September 2008 that dream came true when she had saved enough money to purchase an 8 year old gelding named Kevin. She said, “He’s been so good and patient with me ever since we met.”

Ute grew up in a rural suburb of Bremen, Germany and began riding horses when she was 10 years old. She would have loved to own her own horse as a child but she didn’t. However, she would provide riding lessons to children at the local riding stables and in return she was allowed to ride and care for one of the private owned horses as well as the lesson horses.
Team Member: Kamaria Kuhn
July 06, 2016
Kamaria Kuhn (photo left) is a Reproduction Technician at Pioneer Equine Hospital (PEH), an SBS Affiliate Lab in Oakdale, California. Born and raised in the Silicon Valley, she didn’t know she was born with the “horse gene” until she was eight years old and went with a friend to a horse show. With a chuckle she said, “It was all downhill from there!” That’s when all other activities and sports became a part of her past and she began riding horses. She knew from that point forward she was going to be happiest in a career working with horses.
What's New at SBS in Maryland?
June 05, 2016
Breeding season is a crazy time of year for us but we all relish in the long, hard days and generally unpredictable schedule because there are so many pay-offs. Not least among these pay-offs is the arrival of long anticipated foals and the opportunity to help our clients with their new breeding plans as there is so much excitement in the planning and realization of breeding goals. We at Select Breeders Services (SBS) are all horse crazy and love the opportunity to share in this with our clients. So far, 2016 has been a great year for us. Continued growth in our mare management services division has meant an increase in staffing, so we have several new team members to introduce.
SBS Standing Several Stallions for 2016
March 31, 2016
Select Breeders Services (SBS) in Maryland and Select Breeders Southwest (SBSW) in Texas are standing several stallions for the 2016 breeding season. SBS and the processing, storage and distribution of equine frozen semen go hand in hand. However, we offer a wide variety of equine reproduction services which includes the management of stallions for cooled semen shipments during the breeding season. Some of the stallions we manage remain resident at our facilities in Maryland or Texas whereas others may trailer in and out of the facilities on collection days while they remain in training at other facilities. At SBS in Maryland we also provide the collection and processing of cooled semen on farm at two of the largest Sporthorse farms in the country. The breeds and disciplines we work with stretch to both ends of the spectrum from draft horses to miniature horses as well as successful show stallions to stallions used for trail riding.
Team Member: Nicole Webster
February 25, 2016
Nicole Webster works alongside Dr. Justin Ritthaler at Weatherford Equine Breeding Center (WEBC), an SBS Affiliate Lab, in Weatherford, Texas. Due to her father’s military service her family had an opportunity to live in California and Germany as well as many places in between. All of the moving around didn’t allow her to have horses while she was growing up. However, her parents did all they could to support her interest in horses.
January 07, 2016
Rachel Weese has been working alongside Dr. Jerry Longworth since 2004. Born and raised in Phoenix, AZ she can’t think of a time when she didn’t love horses. When she was nine years old her brother, who has autism, began riding horses as a form of therapy. Rachel began volunteering with the program which was the first time she was able to actually be around the animals she loved so much. Her love for horses continued and she began competing in barrel racing, poles, goat tying, team penning and started roping anything that walked.
2015 SBS Annual Meeting Review
December 11, 2015
Select Breeders in Maryland welcomed affiliate members from around the world on November 17th and 18th, 2015 for the 15th Annual Meeting of SBS Affiliated Laboratories. The purpose of the SBS Annual Meeting is to review procedures and policies, share information and experiences, discuss recent developments in the industry and set plans for the future. Pioneer Equine Hospital
August 27, 2015
As the breeding season at Pioneer Equine Hospital (PEH) comes to an end, we can look back and feel like we accomplished a lot this year, as we have been able to see significant growth in our reproductive program. As the economy in California continues to improve little by little, so does the demand to breed mares. Our embryo recipient herd has grown from just a few mares a year ago to a substantial herd, in order to serve the increased interest in the area to transfer embryos. We have been very fortunate this year to have had an exceptional embryo recovery rate and equally fortunate to have acquired high-quality recipient mares that have helped us maintain excellent pregnancy rates post transfer. We have also seen a renewed interest in breeding with frozen semen in the area and our barns were often full with mares waiting to be bred. Now that there are fewer mares in the barns, we are ramping up to start freezing semen again and hope to welcome a number of new stallions.
Why Utilize a SBS Mobile Laboratory?
July 29, 2015
A mobile semen freezing laboratory is the perfect solution for stallion owners, managers, and/or trainers who wish to have their stallions remain at “home” rather than sending them to a facility for semen freezing. Select Breeders Service (SBS) pioneered the equine mobile semen freezing industry and to this day remains the leader in the industry. The SBS Affiliate Network has four mobile laboratories within the United States and one in Sweden. In this article we will discuss why you may choose to use a mobile lab, where our mobile labs travel, and whether semen can be qualified for export when processed in a mobile lab.
Team Member: Maike Dueser

Caitlyn (Caity) Hood serves as a technician for the SBS Affiliate Laboratory, Oklahoma City Equine Center (OCEC). She grew up in Southwestern Oklahoma in the town of Mountain Park. Her family owns a cattle ranch/wheat farm which is mostly a cow-calf operation. Growing up there were always several horses used for ranch work and she would watch her father team rope. However, at the age of thirteen, Caity’s mom gave her English riding lessons as a Christmas present. It took only one lesson and she was hooked!
Humphrey, Giacopuzzi and Associates
May 02, 2015
In 1988, cousins Mike and Richard Giacopuzzi opened Humphrey, Giacopuzzi and Associates Equine Hospital (HGAEH) to provide high quality medicine and surgery to the horses of Ventura County, California. It soon became apparent that there existed a void in reproductive services, especially with respect to assisted reproductive techniques. In response, Dr. Richard transformed the then seldom used HGAEH farrier shop into what is now the clinic’s Equine Reproductive Center.
Dr. Glenn Blodgett named AQHA President
March 26, 2015
We wish to congratulate our SBS Affiliate member, Dr. Glenn Blodgett (left), on his new position as the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) President. He obtained his bachelors of science degree in Animal Science from Oklahoma State University before attending Texas A&M University where he received his degree in veterinary medicine. It was in 1982 that Dr. Blodgett became the resident veterinarian and manager of the horse division of the historic 6666 Ranch. For the past 33 years he has been a key factor in the success of the 6666 Ranch horse division and their reputation as an all-time leading breeder of both racing and performance Quarter Horses.

In 10 years, it has expanded to one of the largest stud farms of Arabian horses in Europe with a unique collection of horses, including the Arabian stallion QR Marc (World Champion in 2012 – Salon du Cheval, Paris). To optimize the reproductive performance of his horses, Mr. Gheysens insisted on becoming an EU recognized semen center and a well-equipped embryo transfer lab with approximately 150, mainly Arabian, recipient mares. The ET lab also works in close collaboration with Keros nv, one of the largest ET centers in Europe.

In April 2015, Dr. Scofield and the staff at SBS Veterinary Services are pleased to announce the addition of Trans-Vaginal Oocyte Aspiration (TVA) as a service offered at their clinic in Chesapeake City, Maryland. TVA, also known as Oocyte Pickup, shows promise in producing foals from the most reproductively challenging mares and stallions with limited frozen semen reserves. As Dr. Young explained in last months Blog article, Ovum Pickup in the Mare, TVA and Intra-cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) offer the latest in assisted reproductive technology to help produce foals.

However, SBS Italia will be the only facility in Italy where Big Star’s semen will be available.
January 29, 2015
When you don’t own your own horse the next best thing is finding a way to be around horses owned by other people. Mallory Canaday (photo left) grew up in a town just outside of Dallas, Texas. Like most working in the horse industry, she has loved horses since she was a little girl. She was the only one in her immediate family interested in horses. However, the majority of her extended family was involved in agriculture so finding her way to the horses was pretty easy. All these years later she is now the Stallion Reproduction and Freeze Technician at the 6666 Ranch in Guthrie, TX.

January 05, 2015
SBSItalia is pleased to announce to the Italian sport horse breeders that we have reached a strategic agreement for managing the frozen semen of Paul Schockemöhle’s (photo left with Totilas) stallions. The agreement will be operational beginning in 2015 and was achieved thanks to the contribution of Mr. Schockemöhle’s Italian partner, Matteo Delmiglio. He will take care of all marketing aspects related to breeding sales while SBSItalia will be solely responsible for the logistical aspects regarding the import, storage and distribution of frozen semen from the entire stallion catalog of this prestigious German breeding farm. Also, breeders will be allowed to bring their mares to the two Italian SBS Affiliate Laboratories, SBSItalia and Centro di Riproduzione Equina Centauro, to be inseminated with frozen semen of particular stallions which are currently only available if bred at Paul Schockemöhle’s (P.S.) facility in Mühlen, Germany.

Julie Skaife, PhD
December 04, 2014
Julie Skaife has been working for Select Breeders Services in Maryland for over 8 years now. Her primary responsibility is management of the SBS Affiliate Laboratory Network. However, as Julie explains, “One of the great benefits of working for a small company is that you get the opportunity to participate in just about everything. We have no HR department; we have no marketing or sales division; so we all get to wear multiple hats and pitch in where we can. It’s a great learning opportunity and I enjoy building new skills.” Julie was very much involved in the development of the SBS website and monthly email newsletter and continues to take an active role in directing the marketing efforts of the company.

Born and raised in Pretoria, South Africa, Leann Newton is one of five children. At a young age she watched her three older siblings participate in pony club. However, just as her interest in horses grew her father sold the horses and all the gear. When she asked him why he sold them she remembers him saying, “you too will grow out of horses, it is just a passing phase.” However, it wasn’t a passing phase for Leann…it was her life’s passion which has taken her all over the world.

Dr. Gianmaria Postinger
August 02, 2014
Since childhood Gianmaria’s dream was to work with animals as a veterinarian especially with large animals such as cattle, sheep and horses. At the age of seven, he received a small Shetland pony which stood only 95 cm tall. From that point forward horses became his main focus. He was indulged by his parents over the years through the breeding of Haflinger horses.
Do You Know the History of SBS?
July 15, 2014
You may know what Select Breeders Services (SBS) is but do you know how it all began? Select Breeders Service was the vision of Paul Loomis (SBS CEO and founder) in 1981 while he was in graduate school at Colorado State University. As he conducted experiments for developing methods to successfully freeze equine semen he believed then, as he does now, that frozen semen would one day be the preferred method for breeding quality horses. So in 1987, Paul incorporated SBS as a company dedicated to the responsible development of the equine industry.

In 1992, Paul Loomis moved the headquarters of SBS from Massachusetts to the grounds of Hilltop Farm in Maryland. During this time, Jonathan Clark had been working for Hilltop Farm doing odd jobs, mowing grass, painting, cleaning stalls and cooking. Growing up near Rising Sun, MD Jonathan had no clue he would one day have a career with horses. He did not grow up showing or breeding horses like most who work in the horse industry and actually has never owned one of his own. Even so, he has now been working as a valuable member of the SBS team for the past 20 years.
Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital
April 01, 2014
As autumn arrives in the Southern Hemisphere the team at Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital (GVEH) reflect on another successful breeding season. We have been providing specialized care to the horses of Victoria, Australia since our foundation in 1988 by Dr. Angus McKinnon and Dr. Jim Vasey. The practice has expanded rapidly since and now routinely attracts horses from across Australia and New Zealand. The 85 acre irrigated farm is home to the main hospital, the reproduction center and the international quarantine facility. With the increasing popularity of our embryo transfer program it quickly became apparent this property was not big enough to cater our needs prompting the purchase of a second farm a few kilometers from the practice.
Update - SBSW Genetic Disease and Testing Seminar
March 04, 2014
On February 19, 2014 Select Breeders Southwest in Aubrey, TX hosted a seminar about genetic diseases and testing. The wacky winter weather gave us a break and it turned out to be a warm and altogether pleasant day for our seminar. A congenial crowd of over 55 people made up of veterinarians, horse breeders and college students filled the beautiful western themed meeting hall at Lantana Lodge for this highly anticipated event. Our guests were treated to gorgeous views of Lake Ray Roberts and mingled happily over a delicious selection of light fare before finally taking their seats for an interesting presentation by Dr. Sharon Spier from UC Davis California.

From the age of four Erin Bishop knew horses would be a part of her life. What she didn’t know is that decades later she would be a part of the largest international equine reproduction company in the world. She was the first in her family to pursue riding horses so her mom signed her up for English riding lessons at the farm a mile down the road. In return for free riding lessons she would spend hours at the stable taking care of the horses, cleaning tack, and traveling with trainers as a groom. The only horse she ever owned was when she was 6 years old, her Shetland pony named Star. She would ride the horses owned by the farm or other clients at the stable. “Due to financial constraints I wasn’t able to own my own horse. However, I never felt deprived because of the kindness and generosity of others allowing me to ride theirs.”
Peterson and Smith Equine Reproduction Lab
February 04, 2014
Peterson & Smith Equine Reproduction Center (PSERC) had another successful year in 2013. Our embryo transfer program enjoyed the high standard of success we have been able to maintain for almost 15 years. We continued to share in our client’s success through our mare and stallion management services. The promising Arabian stallion, Trussardi, was added to our resident stallion roster and had a very successful cooled semen campaign. We were also able to freeze and export Trussardi’s semen to Australia and are anticipating the arrival of his first foals “downunder” later in 2014. We thank Tamworth Veterinary Center for their assistance in opening this new market for Trussardi, as well as their continued support in the management of the Australian distribution program for Smart Sugar Badger, another resident stallion.
Delta Equine Center
January 12, 2014
When hurricane Rita roared through the Gulf of Mexico in 2005 and then slammed into southwest Lousiana it was disasterous for Delta Equine Center (DEC). Dr. Larry Findley, Sr., founder and primary owner of DEC, took this catastrophe as an opportunity to build a better, state of the art facility. Through faith and hope the new DEC was constructed as it is today. It is a full service veterinary hospital located just south of exit 7 on I-10 in Vinton, Louisiana. Staffed with five veterinarians and a 24 hour crew of knowledgeable technicians the services provided by DEC include equine reproduction, equine sports medicine, surgery, treatment, and small animal care. They also have the ability to provide hyperbaric oxygen therapy and MRI.
Genetic Disease and Testing Seminar
December 03, 2013
Many breed registries now require testing for specific genetic diseases in order to be accepted into their registry. As research continues into the genetic diseases of specific breeds it’s possible the number of required tests could increase. Do you know what your breed registry requires? Do you know how these diseases can affect the foals you produce?

SBSItalia was relocated to Medesano (PR) in Via Carnevala, 17 from San Daniele Po (CR), Italy where they had been located since 1994. This decision was made solely for organizational and logistical reasons and to improve the services given to our customers. With this article we take the opportunity to thank the Marchi-Balestreri family, owner of Cascina Cristella, for having given to SBSItalia the opportunity to perform its clinical activities for over 15 years. Medesano is a small town at the foot of the hills of Parma strategically positioned with easy accessibility via either the motorway A15 (exit at Parma Ovest and Fornovo) or A1 (exit Parma and Fidenza).

News From Select Breeders Southwest
August 19, 2013
Aubrey is described on billboards and in travel guides as “Horse Country, USA”, a perfect location for Select Breeders SW. In fact, based on the work being done at SBSW, that slogan could more accurately read “Horse Country, Global”. Year after year, SBSW has been shipping frozen semen from multiple breeds and disciplines worldwide; our 2013 roster for collection included the biggest stallion names in QH racing shipped to South America, champion cutting horse semen to Australia, New Zealand, South America and the European Union, and semen from prize winning Arabian show horses shipped to Qatar, Israel, the EU and Australia. Some of these champions stand at Select Breeders SW Stallion Center; others are collected from our Mobile Labs, but all of this globally bound semen is stored and then distributed from our state of the art facility in Aubrey, Texas.

News From Emerald Ridge Farm
December 28, 2011
For the convenience of your Canadian breeders and in order to avoid shipping delays and additional expense, US stallion owners with SBS frozen semen should consider sending some frozen semen to our SBS Affiliate Laboratory in Ontario, Canada - Emerald Ridge Farm - for storage and distribution. Semen would then be immediately available to ship domestically to Canadian mare owners. To facilitate transfer, Select Breeders in Maryland and Texas will coordinate and combine the shipment of semen stored at their locations for transfer to Emerald Ridge, enabling participating semen owners to share the associated costs of the export shipment. Interested stallion owners should contact SBS-MD, SBSW or Emerald Ridge for more information by January 20th so we can gauge the level of interest and timing of shipment.. Emerald Ridge Farm, in Rockwood, Ontario has been the only Canadian affiliate lab of the SBS network since 2007. The farm, sitting on 134 acres of land, situated 10 kilometers outside of Guelph, Ontario, has been in operation since 1997.

News from Hagyard Equine - September 2011
September 28, 2011
It’s a busy and exciting time at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in our 135th year of existence! In the Fertility Unit (we are optimists, though the vast majority of our patients are subfertile), we are seeing a steady stream of mares barren from the 2011 breeding season, working with researchers to find solutions for barren mares, and still breeding non-racing sport horses and Southern hemisphere Thoroughbreds. The remaining time is currently being filled with freezing semen from Standardbreds and Warmbloods for both domestic and overseas use. We have recently updated our breeding shed including modifying our phantom with hydraulic lifts to improve fine adjustability as we see a disproportionate number of stallions with musculoskeletal deficits.
US Breeders Should Consider the Australian Market
August 29, 2011
Here in the US breeding season is winding down, but for our affiliate labs in Australia it is just getting started. At Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital they just bred their first mare August 21st. Many of their mares are currently under lights and they will start breeding Thoroughbreds on September 1st. As a full service vet clinic GVEH is a busy place and the repro department is no exception. Every year they breed about 500 mares in the clinic and many more on farm visits. With >300 mares in their recipient mare herd they perform >200 embryo transfers a season. They also stand stallions during the cooled semen season, receive local clients that trailer in for semen collections and freeze semen as an SBS affiliate lab year round. In addition, GVEH serves as headquarters for SBS Australasia.

SBS in Sweden Participates in Gene Bank Project
May 26, 2011
Dr. Kerstin Darenius of Caballa, our SBS affiliate lab in Sweden, has recently become involved in the preservation of Swedish horse breeds with the creation of a frozen semen gene bank. For endangered or rare breeds, where the number of animals available for breeding is small, collection, freezing and storage of semen is a valuable method for preserving genetic material for future use. Many countries within the European Union have been taking action to preserve a number of valuable livestock species. During the last several years semen from cattle, sheep, horses and goats has been collected for this purpose.
